There’s an advanced, minimally-invasive procedure that can now quickly get you “back” to a pain-free lifestyle. Griffin Health is leading the way in providing minimally invasive lower back surgery in Connecticut. The advanced Prone Transpsoas (PTP) lateral interbody fusion procedure relieves lower back pain with less pain, a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery than traditional surgical methods.
The lumbar is the bottom five vertebrae in your back and is quite literally the “backbone” of your body, carrying the load for many physical activities. This makes the lumbar especially prone to degradation and injury. Lower back problems can originate from a disc, bone, or ligaments pressing onto the spinal cord or nerve roots. Some of the common lower issues are:
Degenerative Disc Disease
As we age, intervertebral discs in the lumbar can lose flexibility, height, and elasticity, causing pain due to irregular alignment of the spine or a bulging disc that compresses nerves and results in pain or numbness in the lower back or legs.
Degenerative Spondylolisthesis
Degenerated discs, stress fractures, birth defects, and sometimes tumors or trauma can cause vertebrae to slip out of alignment, putting painful pressure on nerves in the lower back and causing instability.
Spinal Stenosis
Individuals with a degeneration in their spine often experience a narrowing of the spinal canal that puts painful pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots. Spinal stenosis can happen on its own or with other spinal conditions including changes in spinal alignment.
Prone Transpsoas (PTP) lateral interbody fusion is a minimally invasive spinal procedure that uses a small incision in the side of the abdomen to remove the problem disc and replace it with a device that restores height to the disc space, re-establish proper spinal alignment, and relieves pressure on the nerves. Unlike traditional spine surgery, the patient is lying face down during PTP, making it easier for the surgeon to restore appropriate spinal alignment and eliminates the need for repositioning for additional procedures – resulting in a significantly shorter surgery. Additional Benefits of PTP:
Reduced blood loss due to less tissue dissection
Spares bones, ligaments, and muscles
Single-position surgery decreases chances of infection
Shorter hospital stay
Large interbody implant that restores alignment of the spine and promotes fusion
Reduced postoperative pain leading to quicker recovery
