The Mediterranean diet refers on the traditional eating habits in the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. A Mediterranean-style meal plan can help individuals achieve a healthy eating lifestyle that:
- Emphasizes increased consumption of plant foods, including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and legumes.
- Includes extra virgin olive oil as the primary source of fat used in cooking.
- Includes fish and lean poultry while reducing red meat consumption.
- Avoids sugary beverages and limits processed foods and refined grains.
This style of eating can help reduce the risk of heart disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, depression, and some cancers.
